FAQs

+ What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an event for people to join forces in creating solutions through fast paced, creative and interdisciplinary problem solving. Serving as a platform for idea generation, relationship building and skill progression, participants will be energised and geared up to tackle the next challenge in the legal industry.

+ Why InnovateLaw?

InnovateLaw is a joint partnership between The Law Society of NSW and The Legal Forecast. The event focuses on innovating at the crossroads of legal entrepreneurship and technology. In groups of four to five, participants will be given a legal challenge. After hacking, teams should have a proposal, prototype and model to present to a panel of judges from the legal profession. By working together for the weekend, participants will gain opportunities to learn from each other – integrating their learning and skills into solutions for legal practice

+ But I know nothing about law or coding?!

If you don't know about law or engineering, don’t worry. InnovateLaw is beginner friendly. There will be plenty of mentors to help you out before and during the hacking. Come with an open mind, work with a great team, learn a lot, and most importantly, have fun.

+ Who can participate?

Absolutely anyone! Lawyers, engineers, designers from anywhere and of all ages. Hackathons produce "hackers", not the other way around. We know that some of the best solutions come from diverse teams and we are looking for professionals as well as students.

+ Where is InnovateLaw being held?

The Hackathon will take place at the Law Society of NSW.

+ Where do I find a team?

Part of the fun of a hackathon is meeting new people. We will have time at the beginning of the event for everyone to meet and form teams. Teams will work in small groups to combine their expertise and help each other to create the best idea possible.

+ Who will be there?

Industry professionals, practising lawyers, students, and more. Judges and mentors will be announced closer to the day of the event to participants.

+ Where and when can I register?

Registrations will be opening soon. Due to space and catering, we are only accepting the first 100 participants for the event.

+ How much does it cost?

InnovateLaw is absolutely free. We will provide you WiFi, meals, and workspace.

+ Where can I find the agenda?

The agenda will be released closer to the date. Stay tuned.

+ Who owns my IP, rights, code or ideas?

You own all the rights to your intellectual property. We won’t claim any right over anything made during this event.

+ What can I eat and drink?

The event is fully catered for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Supper is included for those opting to stay working till late.

+ What are the challenges?

The challenges will be provided by The Supreme Court of New South Wales and Law Society of NSW at the InnovateLaw Hackathon launch party.

+ What are the prizes?

Participants will compete for prizes and finalists will be invited to present their solutions at the Future of Legal Innovation in the Profession (FLIP) Conference Award Dinner held on 25th July. Stay tuned for more details.

+ What should I bring?

Bring your laptop, charger and snacks. Most crucially, don't forget motivation, an open-mind and creativity.

+ What if I have more questions?

Feel free to drop us a line at hello@innovatelawsyd.com and we'll help you out.
